UW builds focused on farming smites, mindblades, etc. I farmed AATAXES with my mesmer before SF nerf. In and out of UW with 1 or 2 ectos in 10 min. Almost every elementalist nerf was due to mesmer usage of the skills. I have said it in other threads, those who flame mesmers hate hard to learn classes. Nothing primes Discordway better than a mesmer, even without PVE only skills. ANET knows mesmers can be overpowered very quickly with just a nudge to their skills in any update, that is why they are so carefull not to buff them too well. Sins and Mes draw the most player hate and nerfs for a reason..... "YOU CAN'T HANDEL THE TRUTH".

I think the above player is hysterical.
Mesmers aren't hard to learn in PvE, really. Farming is also an unimportant application of PvE; a professions strength in that field is probably going to be shifted sooner or later all of the time. Unless ofcourse you think of farming as a skillful thing to do when it's a chore... if so, do you find hoovering the front room skillful to do?
Also, Assassins are pretty awesome in PvE. They were also stupid powerful in PvP and nerfed for a good reason.
PS: What the majority thinks means nothing, they probably still think that Tank 'N# Spank is good, and I'm speaking of the Elementalist version.

Nothing better to do when you're bored than buttonmash with an AP Mesmer and stare at random numbers all day!

VoR, Empathy, Pain Inverter, Backfire, Auspicious Incantation, Arcane Echo, Sin Support, Res Chant OR Rebirth.
Pure damage in HM. 9 fast cast, 16 domination, 9 inspiration.
Enemies wand like crazy in HM and attack faster too. Arcane echo is best used on either empathy or sin support. If you have r10 ebon vanguard and lead with a hex before echo sin, you can pretty much guarantee the death of whatever you cast upon. Echoing empathy and spreading the punishing love is perhaps the single fastest way to deal damage in HM apart from perhaps a deep freeze/DoT build which relies on keeping the enemies in the damage.
I've used the above build (with slight variation before GWEN and the VoR buff) to achieve legendary guardian, legendary master of the north and legendary vanquisher. Enemies MELT in HM to mesmer domination.

Yea you got some titles. Auto-attacking Wammos get these, too. Big deal.
[Spiteful Spirit] + [Arcane Echo] (+ [Pain Inverter])
I just beat your damage with just two skills. Three if you count the Pain Inverter which has nothing to do with playing a Mesmer ...

Add [[enfeebling blood] and you've beaten it in terms of utility aswell.

To get this a little back on topic:
I like that that one for HM
12+1+3 Illusion
10+1 Inspiration
8+1 Fast Casting
[Wandering Eye][Clumsiness][Lyssa's Aura][Frustration][Cry of Pain][Pain Inverter][Energy Tap][Flesh of my flesh]
Does great damage (100 AoE armor ignoring every few seconds) and prevents tons of damage (interrupts). [[Frustration] triggers on [[Wandering Eye] interrupts for some nice bonus single target damage. For painful enemies there is [[Pain Inverter]. [[Energy Tap] is kind of a filler ... I sometimes run out of energy from spamming the first 5 skills but it could probably be replaced by something more useful.
In areas with heavy ench removal it is possible to swap [[Lyssa's Aura] for [[Energy Drain]. Doesn't give quite as much energy but can't be stripped.
In NM, [[Tease] is also fun. No mana if the interrupt is missed so I wouldn't recommend it in HM.
Summary: Very good in both damage (AoE and single target) and utility (mainly interrupting physicals). I don't think any other class can play something like that in an efficient way except for Mesmers.

I don't understand the fascination with clumsiness and wandering eye. Yes , it's 100 aoe damage and that's the only good thing , the interrupt part becomes kinda pointless when the enemy has an increased attack speed so that one missed attack won't matter.
Oh , and [Assassin's Promise]>[Lyssa's Aura] in terms of energy management. Upier got me addicted on AP

Sorry... Unless you're playing Tank n Spank in DoA/Slavers/UW Spiteful is unreliable at hitting more than 2 enemies at any time. Comparing the ~75 damage from that with the 53 I am getting from empathy, the extra 20 or so damage isn't worth the elite.
Auto attacking wammos don't get many titles... that's why you see them in noob areas before dying out somewhere after LA.

You can always arcane mimic Lyssa's Aura and have another elite.

as with any class, it's the user that determines how efficient that character is.
just because you have an ele doesn't mean you will know what skills combine together effectively and "blow up stuff fastest" as someone said earlier in the thread.
likewise, just because you are playing a mesmer doesn't mean you bring a bar full of interrupts (which are almost always not needed or not necesary in pve). a good mesmer knows what monsters they will be facing and what their teammates are running. a good pve mesmer needs to know pretty much everything about the instance and their team before preparing a good build and knowing how to use it.
yes, AP and VoR are very useful and easy to slap together a button-mash build. that doesn't make mesmers useful any more than any other gimmick build that people run nowadays. where's the originality?

Well, the challenge was to find something that Mesmers could unquestionably do better than other classes - I was actually going for the mass Assassin summoning rather than the fast-cast nuking.

Something that memers could unquestionably do better than other classes?
Signet mesmers come to mind. With artificer insignia, a mesmer can have very high armor (especially if they also use a shield since they dont need much energy in that build) and fast casting also works with signets (otherwise we have symbolic celerity in FC).
This build would also compensate for the fact that mesmers have inferior energy primary attribute line unlike soul reaping and energy storage. On the hand, there are not many good signets in this game.
For example a RA Me/A build with:
[dancing daggers][entangling asp][signet of toxic shock][signet of midnight][signet of shadows][mantra of inscriptions][Resurrection Signet]
